How do you feel about buying factory-refurbished electronics?
Rod’s new iMac has me wondering if I should save ~$230 vs new and buy the identical machine to his.
The Apple Certified Refurbished Products FAQ certainly makes me feel confident (and I’d be buying AppleCare in either case).
Your thoughts?

Do it. If there is one company I would trust with a refurb, it would be your beloved Apple..

Ditto what everyone else said. Go for it. It’ll pay for the AppleCare :-)

1st gen Nano, 1st Intel Mac Mini & final Blacbook are all refurb & going strong. Refurbs get more testing & checking than new. I like them.

Not a single problem with my refurbed mac, a year and a half in.

My PowerBook G4 is a refurb from Apple. I would do it again. Fresh off the line Macs aren’t inspected like the refurbs are.

Thanks for asking this. I’ve wondered myself, and it sounds like the consensus is THIS IS A BIG FUCKING DEAL. Sorry, faulty meme filter. Anyway, thanks. I’ll probably buy a refurb in the future.

Refurb from the original manufacturer is usually pretty solid. No prob with three refurbed Macs and four refurbed ThinkPads from IBM/Lenovo

OH, HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF GAINSAVER? Nevermind this isn’t about me. I’ve always had decent experiences with Apple certified Refurb, actually

Refurbs are typically perfectly good machines that had, say, a faulty chip that’s been replaced. I’ve bought refurb and will again.

It makes me nervous, but I know that is probably stupid.

Refurbished goods go through more manual checks that “new” ones, so have lower return rates, apparently. My refurbed Macbook was pristine.

I bought a refurb’ed Powerbook many years ago and it was perfect. As long as it’s certified by Apple I think it’s usually a pretty good deal.
