On Twitter and Community (oh, and unicorndogs)
An excerpt. Read the whole thing; it’s fantastic.
I started using twitter the way most of us did: I floated around for awhile and started following people with similar interests or senses of humor. Even in this passive mode Twitter began to demonstrate its usefulness. I wasn’t just learning what people had to say about their day, I was learning at some level what it was like to BE that person. I could picture your workplaces and neighborhoods as well as the attitudes and behaviors of the people with whom they came into contact and described. In short, I was learning about people. More importantly: I was learning about people who were far removed from my local, occupational and social communities. And MOST importantly, I was making my way INTO a new community, the Twitter community.
