Try to take a less dramatic course of action
This attraction, introspection
Diction, predilection
Is breaking my heart again
Breaking my heart again

Harvey Danger - “Sad Sweetheart of the Rodeo” (2000)

John Roderick1, hogtied by Ione Skye:

Lucky bastard.

  1. Huh?” John had a brief tenure as the touring keyboard player in Harvey Danger.

Roderick is great and all… but this song is greater… and the album is even better than that.

Anyway. Thanks to Merlin for helping me decide what I’ll be listening to on repeat for the next few days.

This song maybe sorta kinda inspired an older FMGreen song.

So if you’ve got greatness in you
Won’t you do us all a favor
And keep it to yourself.

Harvey Danger - Pike St./Park Slope (steelopus cover)

Here’s a song that most of you have probably never heard because you thought Harvey Danger was just a one hit wonder. That’s unfortunate, because they’ve made some great music through the years, including this gem off their brilliant second album.

It’s another in a growing list of 40 in 40 songs that I’d never attempted to play before recording. I’m enjoying that challenge, although the self-imposed deadline makes it difficult to truly do some songs justice, but, it’s a start.

Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta

I’m not sick, but I’m not well.
And I’m so hot, ‘cause I’m in Hell.

Dear Friends,

After 15 years, three albums, hundreds of shows, and far more twists and turns than we ever imagined possible, we’ve decided to put Harvey Danger to rest. The decision is totally mutual and utterly amicable. Everyone is very proud of the work we’ve done together, but we’ve also come to feel that our collaboration has—in a very positive way—run its course.

(continued)

This makes me sad. It’s never easy to see one of your favorite bands call it quits, especially one that was so consistently good.

What makes it worse is that I was never lucky enough to see them live. (story)

If one of their final shows is within a few hours drive, I’ll be seriously considering attending.  Clear off the couch cushions; one of you may be getting a DM from me soon.

Harvey Daner - Meetings With Remarkable Men (Show me the hero)

I went to see Kip Winger,
He said, “In my day we knew how to party; bands today, c’mon, not hardly!”
He had a back-up singer, (doo doo doo doo)
He said, “The metal scene is a disgrace, but I ain’t got no dog in that race!”

I don’t know how it happened, but none of my favorite bands ever suffered from a sophomore slump.  Everyone should run out right now and buy the album King James Version.  Oh god, this band is so good.

After a 6 year hiatus, they reunited in 2007 and released a new album online for FREE (before NIN or Radiohead, I might add), and they toured the country supporting it.

I, like most people, discovered them thanks to the gem Flagpole Sitta, but unlike most people, I never let go.  They struck a chord in a similar manner to how weezer, Superdrag, and Hum all did.

So in late 2007, my friends and I piled into a car one night and drive to Buffalo to see them play.  Oh how excited I was, to finally get to see one of my favorite bands for the first time. We got to the venue, but the streets were suspiciously quiet, and parking was unnaturally abundant.  As we walked up to the door of the bar, we saw a hastily sharpied note on the door that read: “Sorry for any inconvenience, tonights Harvey Danger show has been cancelled.”  Beneath that, someone had scribbled in pencil “You F*#kers.

Ugh.  Oh well, at least I’ll always have their great music.
