15 Days of Weezer - Day 4  -  (Original. Other Days.)

Day 4- A video of your favorite Weezer performance

Say it ain’t so - Live on Letterman - August 4, 1995

There’s nothing not to love about this. Rivers is still wearing the cage that was being used to lengthen his leg. Pat’s got green hair. Brian is playing a beautiful double-cut Les Paul. And Matt… oohhhh Matt… he’s doing everything he can to try to steal the stage, just as he always did. He was the heart and soul of the band, and the only member that was able to keep Rivers’ in check.

“Welcome back, Dave.”

Foo Fighters - “Everlong” (Late Show; Feb 21, 2000)

[snip]…And, brother, is that Taylor Hawkins ever a goddamned force of nature. Crunch.

It’s definitely one of the best songs of the 90s, and this performance is even more impressive when you realize how many subtle changes they made to the song’s structure and dynamics, yet they literally never missed a beat.

But… my favorite part of this song is that by simply changing the first word from “Hello,” to “Jell-O®,” you can turn it into an instant Weird Al classic.

Holy sweet mother. Am I the last to see this?

Not sure I’ve ever seen Dave ask a band to play out like that.

The Heavy : How You Like Me Now? (Letterman, January 18 2010)

Holy crap how is this band not super mega famous?

A few thoughts:

  • This is really good.
  • Very few bands can don the GQ look on stage and actually get away with it.
  • It’s further proof that a charismatic and super-talented frontman/lead singer is the most sure-fire way for a band to find popular musical success.
  • That youthful exuberance and genuineness is why Letterman is trouncing his late-night competitors.
  • I personally don’t think I could listen to more than a few songs worth of this before I got bored with it, but then again, I surprised myself by really enjoying the past few Gnarls Barkley records, so who knows.

Weezer - I’m Your Daddy - Live on Letterman - With Paul Schaffer & The Late Show Band - 10/30/2009

It’s just a good song, really. That’s all there is to it. They’re having fun, so I can’t fault them for that. I’d still rather see and hear this than almost any other mainstream band these days.

Weezer - Say It Ain’t So - Live on Letterman - 1995

It’s incredible how far Rivers has come as a frontman. Astonishing, really.

Matt Sharp bouncing all over the place, Rivers standing there with a giant steel cage under his pants, ever so slowly lengthening his right leg, Brian before he turned gay (I’m convinced he’s gay), Pat rocking the fuck out of the drums with green! hair… this is one of my favorite live performances ever.

Weezer - If You’re Wondering If I Want You To (I Want You To) - Live on Letterman - With Paul Schaffer & The Late Show Band - 10/29/2009

This was thoroughly entertaining.  Apparently on tonight’s performance they were all decked out in their custom Weezer Snuggies. I look forward to seeing it.

Silversun Pickups “Lazy Eye”

Live on Letterman - 12/1/06

Network television debut.

SSPU,ARB.

I love seeing bands’ national TV debuts. They are almost always the best TV performance they’ll ever give.  The passion rarely gets more intense for these musicians, who’ve been working at this goal for years, to finally reach a tremendous milestone in the history of any great band.

This debut leaves the audience wanting more.  That’s perfect.
