Nine Inch Nails - The Wretched (steelopus cover)

Well… that was interesting.

There’s really no easy way to cover a NIN song. My original intent was to record a completely stripped down acoustic version, but somewhere along the line I lost my way and took it too far. Trying to actually recreate a song via Reznor’s original formula is just a recipe for humiliating yourself. That dude has some monster synths at his disposal, but more importantly, he knows what the fuck he’s doing with them. Plus, he’s a damn good pianist and that’s something I definitely cannot say about myself. I can hold my own on just about any other instrument, but stick me in front of some keys and I’m mostly useless.

So I guess this falls somewhere between an acoustic guitar arrangement and an attempt at capturing the key tones of the original. I ran out of time at the end and the synth drums are what ended up suffering the most and then I had to rush the final mix.

The Fragile is the best NIN album. The production is fantastic. I still hear something new every time I listen to it.

Now you know. This is what it feels like.

Josh Freese - Drumming Live with NIN - Wish

Do you like NIN? Do you like drumming? Watch this.

I’ve had a shitty week that probably won’t improve much, and this aural pummeling is exactly what I needed tonight.

It’s Movember First, and I need your help.
Greetings, moustache fans! It’s November 1 and I’m ready to grow this thing. Well, reasonably ready. I spent yesterday freaking out every time I saw myself in the mirror, and jumping ten feet every time the Lady touched my face. It felt…creepy.
I’m very aware that I look different. A bartender at a watering hole I frequent asked me if I were my own brother. Instead of saying I look like House, people are saying I looking like an ugly Trent Reznor. I can deal with that I guess.
Anyway, here’s the thing: I don’t know what kind of moustache to grow. Here’s where you come in – reblog the hell out of that pic above, but please scribble, Photoshop or MSPaint onto it the type of moustache that you think I should have. If you’re not on Tumblr, email it to me at indefensible@gmail.com and I’ll post what you send me.
If you submit an idea AND donate, say five bucks, I’ll put your idea in a hat and draw one at random later in the week. If you’ve ever wanted the chance to make me look like even more of a tool, then here it is. People who have already donated - you guys of course get a chance too!
Thanks for your ideas, and thanks for supporting Movember. So far with your help we’ve raised $480 for prostate cancer research and initiatives into depression in men.

Huh. I didn’t realize I was following Trent Reznor on Tumblr.

High-res Sometimes I really miss college.  Now is one of those times.
I just found my concert band arrangements of NIN’s Closer and Weezer’s Falling For You.  They were my final projects for MUS321 (Orchestration/Arranging) in April of 2001. Somewhere I’ve got recordings of the Naz concert band sight reading them.
Those were good days. The life of a music major is just about the busiest life you can lead (I’ll fight anyone who tries to tell me their program was more demanding), but it was the kind of busy that I loved. I was busy making music and learning about that which I care most in the world.  I don’t know where I lost my way, but once I’m settled into my new house I think I’ll be ready to get back on the right track.

I’m not Prince or Rivers Cuomo who brags about having hundreds of great songs. And to that I would say, Prince, if you have a hundred great songs or a thousand, how about picking a few and putting them on your record that you’ve put out because your last several have sucked. Same for you, Rivers. I say that constructively, you know. I might be happy and engaged, but I can still be a prick.

- trent reznor (via pitchfork)(via spangley)

  • While much of what Trent and NIN has put out in the past 4 years has been very good, they haven’t all been gems. I’m not sure he’s in any position to be throwing barbs.
  • I still hold my position that much of what Rivers has put out in the past 8 years has also been very good - through both weezer and the Rivers Alone records - though he’s not batting 1.000 either.
  • I think it’s a lot easier to write songs about feeling angry about something (love, life, politics, religion) than it is to write songs about being happy, and overall I’d say Trent is always looking for, and finding, something angry to write about, while Rivers’ entire perspective on life has shifted completely, in a positive direction, since taking up Vipassana Meditation, getting married, and having a child.
  • I still love Trent as a musician, businessman, and a person, despite his magnatism to confrontation.
