NEW QOTSA, MOTHERFUCKERS!

I am loving the sound of this. Very SFTD era stuff. June can’t get here soon enough.

A few thoughts:

  • When did Will Ferrell start playing drums for QOTSA? (Regardless of how talented this new guy is, I’m always going to miss Joey Castillo as their live drummer.)
  • When did Mikey Shuman stop playing his Gibson Ripper? His tone was one of my inspirations to buy one of my own.
  • Brazil knows how to fucking rock, and better yet, they know how to document the rock. I’ve never seen a video shot from the crowd at a concert in Brazil… because Brazilians know they don’t have to do that shit because there will be helicopters and cranes and a separate audio-mix just for the broadcast… so they can just concentrate on enjoying the music instead of holding up their stupid phones in the middle of 100,000 real rock fans.
  • I’m going to sign my organ donor card right now because it’s just a matter of time before Josh Homme is going to need my liver.

There are hundreds of songs in my library that should be played loudly - this one demands to be played loud enough to wake the neighbors… and the dead.

Relatedly: the guitar and bass tones on this track - the whole mix, really - are absolutely flawless. In the pantheon of rock and roll, it doesn’t get more perfectly snarly as this.

I’m not a terrible drummer, but I’d say it would take about seven Steves to make one Dave Grohl.

With that said, this is my favorite song to play along to behind the kit; I think I’m about 75% of the way there. When considering my skill level and 50+ year old Japanese drum kit I should probably be satisfied with that, but I’m not. I want 100%. I’ll get there.

This is my personal theme song for today, for at least these two reasons:

  1. Teachers return en masse from their summer breaks - all of them thinking they’re the most important person on the planet.
  2. Summer hours (8a-3p) end and regular hours resume (8a-4:30p).


But anyway, this is my favorite QOTSA song and this performance is astounding. They really hit their groove about 2 minutes in and then it’s just balls to the wall for the remaining 6 minutes. Joey Castillo, man. Joey fucking Castillo.
