Radiohead - Paranoid Android

6:23 for June 23rd

I wrote yesterday’s praise of this song before I even realized its length. It’s an interesting coincidence.

Radiohead - Paranoid Android: YouTube Artists Mix by OHADI22

I’m completely in love with this.

Steve: I kept seeing this show up on my dashboard and so I finally watched it and, OK fine, it wasn’t bad. I almost didn’t make it past the girl that sings the first verse, but I persevered and was rewarded with some decent guitar efforts, besides - there’s never been a Radiohead cover in which the vocals didn’t completely suck ass.

However, more impressive than all the pieces themselves is the editing work by this OHADI22 person. He somehow managed to take 36 clips of questionable audio quality and mix them into something more listenable than one would expect and that alone is worth recognition.

Finally, let us all remember that Paranoid Android is one of the greatest compositions of all time. The fact that the music translates so well into so many different genres and styles is a credit to the great writing and arranging on the original track.

Weezer covering Paranoid Android (not live)

This is pretty damn good. Rivers’ voice is the weakest link, but Josh Freese is a chameleon drummer that can quite literally duplicate anything he hears, so he rocks the shit out of the drums, and my boy Pat Wilson shreds the hell out of the solo at the end of the song (at least he’s the one playing lead in the video, but it could very well be Rivers playing the lead guitar on the recording (Rivers could out-shred Steve fucking Vai if he wanted to)).

Radiohead - How To Disappear Completely (steelopus cover)

I’ve always thought this was one of their best songs. I’m a sucker for hemiola.

It loses a teensy bit without all the atmospheric textures that they layered on the original, though the birds chirping at the end thanks to recording with the windows open were a nice surprise. Spring has sprung.

Radiohead - The Bends

Anyone that still thinks the new Radiohead album is “good” should take a few minutes to remember what this band used to be capable of creating.

There is more emotion in these 4 minutes than on anything they’ve released in the past decade.

The Darkness covering Radiohead’s Street Spirit (Fade Out)

One more for good measure.

Please file The Darkness under “Bands I wish I was able to see live before they released a somewhat embarrassing second album and then self-destructed.”

Say what you will about their musical grandeur, but godDAMN could these guys shred.  I absolutely love their treatment of this song.  Especially the allusion to Just after the first chorus and the half-time solo at the end.

Pedro The Lion covering Radiohead’s Let Down

A favorite band doing an excellent job of covering my favorite Radiohead song.  Also known as: three guys doing what it takes a different band five guys to do.  Many of my favorite covers are of the less-is-more variety.
