The Rentals - Barcelona

Good morning Michele. Here is Matt Sharp’s love letter to Barcelona.

Ironically it was originally a song named California that was a love letter to your favorite state but then Matt quit weezer and fell in love with Barcelona and wrote an album over there and instead of writing a new song for the city he just rewrote the lyrics for this one.

The Rentals - She Says It’s Alright (steelopus cover)

I’m not gonna lie. I recorded this one on Sunday because I knew I wouldn’t get home from work on Wednesday anytime before 11pm.

It took two takes on Sunday and listening back now I’m pretty sure I could’ve just shat it out in 15 minutes on Wednesday night and it would’ve sounded the same.

Anyway. There haven’t been many 40 in 40 songs for which I recorded vocals and guitar simultaneously, but this is one of them and it certainly shows.

Petra Acapella - The Rentals (Petra Haden)

Happy birthday to Petra Haden. Here’s 72 seconds of her gorgeous voice, acapella.

I love when this track pops up on shuffle, it’s one of the most relaxing pieces of music in my entire 17,000+ song iTunes Library.

(This raw backing track from The Rentals’ song Jumping Around is from an album of b-sides and rarities that the band shared online several years ago titled Little Russel Street.)

The Rentals - She Says It’s Alright

When I think of Spain, I think of The Rentals’ Seven More Minutes album - just as Matt Sharp intended; it’s a love affair with the country (as well as with an anonymous Spanish beauty).  Much of the music was written there, recorded there, and produced there.

No summer is complete without a evening drive, windows down, singing along to this song.  I’ll do the Petra parts; you can be Matt.
