Rivers - 07/11/2010 - photo by Matt Wittmeyer
While shooting the Weezer concert at CMAC, lead singer Rivers Cuomo grabbed my camera to hold himself up on the railing, and made this shot.
I never posted a review of last Sunday’s weezer concert. It would be easiest to just call it a “Greatest Hits” show. I enjoyed myself, but that was mostly because I kept my expectations depressingly low in the weeks leading up to the show. Weezer is definitely not the same band that I fell in love with 16+ years ago, but they’re clearly having a lot of fun on stage and I can’t hold that against them.
They’re increasingly cheesy. For example: they slipped a verse and chorus of Keep Fishin’ into the middle of Trippin’ Down The Freeway, and later in the set: halfway through their cover of MGMT’s Kids, rivers disappeared backstage and returned donning a blonde wig as he slipped Lady Gaga’s Pokerface into the song. Now that he’s free from the shackles of his guitar for a large portion of the set Rivers awkwardly stumbles around the stage as he sings, posturing and posing like the rock vocalists he’s idolized. Pat, weezer’s drummer, now dutifully shreds the guitar parts while the extrodinarily-talented drummer-for-hire, Josh Freese, beats the skins. Before the first encore began, Pat stood in front of Josh on the drum riser and they completely nailed the opening 45 seconds of Van Halen’s Hot For Teacher. Weezer fans in-the-know know that Pat is arguably a better guitarist than Rivers. Do yourselves a favor and check out Pat’s band: The Special Goodness.
But, whatever. Like I said: they’re having fun - and more power to them. The audience loved every minute of it and ate up all the antics like me with a case of Dippin’ Dots.

GPOY With Rivers Cuomo In A Hilariously Bad Split Second Wednesday
In April 2003 I flew to San Diego to visit my sister. On April 5th I drove up to USC to see The Special Goodness play at a coffee house, and Rivers was there cheering on Pat.
I handed my camera to an internet friend of mine and asked her to get a shot of me with Rivers. She snapped about 10… none of which are even remotely good. This one is the best simply because LOOK AT HIS FACE. HA!
Anyway. That was seven years ago. Holy. Freaking. Crap.
Holy shit. Consider my entire year made.
(Patrick Wilson = weezer drummer)
…but more importantly…
(Patrick Wilson = guitar/vocals/songwriter for The Special Goodness)
TSG is such a great band. No-nonsense rock. I’m super psyched.
