The early TMBG songs have such incredible charm - especially the alternate/demo versions. John and John with an accordion and a tape deck… it doesn’t get much more charming than that.

Now it’s over. I’m dead and I haven’t done anything that I want - or I’m still alive and there’s nothing I want to do.

I quickly knocked this one out last night and I’m happy with the result. John and John often get brushed off as gimmicky, but their lyrics have always had a lot of substance bubbling just beneath the surface.

There’s a small part of my brain that wishes TMBG got the widespread attention, respect, and mass success that they deserved before their excellent kids albums shoved them into the mainstream.

But there’s a much larger part of my brain that is happy I was able to enjoy them for so many years amongst modest numbers of truly faithful fans.

Of the bands I consider to be my all-time favorites, being a TMBG fan feels the most like I’m a member of a secret society that’s been given special access to some of the most entertaining music that’s ever been created.
