They Might Be Giants - Kiss Me, Son of God [Alternate]
I built a little empire out of some crazy garbage called the blood of the exploited working class.
The early TMBG songs have such incredible charm - especially the alternate/demo versions. John and John with an accordion and a tape deck… it doesn’t get much more charming than that.

They Might Be Giants - She’s An Angel
I met someone at the dog show
She was holding my left arm
But everyone was acting normal, so I tried to look nonchalant
We both said, “I really love you”
The Shriners loaned us cars
We raced up and down the sidewalk twenty thousand million times

It’s probably been 4 months since you last watched this.
You should watch it again right now so you can start your day with a big smile.

They Might Be Giants - Older
You’re older than you’ve ever been
and now you’re even older
and now you’re even older
and now you’re even older.
you’re older than you’ve ever been
and now you’re even older,
and now you’re older still.
Happy birthday to me.
Nicky’s here!
Tonight we’re going to see They Might Be Giants! And Jonathan Coulton is opening (…meh?). And tomorrow David Bazan is playing in my living room! And Nicky’s here! And Mary’s coming over too!
Hooray!

They Might Be Giants - How Can I Sing Like A Girl?
John and John deserve to go down in history as one of the best songwriting teams that rock and roll has ever seen. Better than The Beatles.
There. I said it.
The production on this track is phenomenal.
How can I sing like a girl
And not be stigmatized
By the rest of the world?
Tell me how can I sing like a girl
And not be objectified
As if I were a girl?

Yea, you probably have all seen this already. But damn, I think this is what they call “making a joyful noise.”
Rochester has spawned a lot of great musicians who’ve had some major success, but Dan Miller is one of the few that I would consider a first-ballot Rochester music hall of famer. The dude hit the jackpot when he was invited to join TMBG and he was smart enough to accept and never look back.
So yeah, this video is awesome. Also, Dan Miller: Yeah!

They Might Be Giants - Dead (steelopus cover)
Now it’s over. I’m dead and I haven’t done anything that I want - or I’m still alive and there’s nothing I want to do.
I quickly knocked this one out last night and I’m happy with the result. John and John often get brushed off as gimmicky, but their lyrics have always had a lot of substance bubbling just beneath the surface.

They Might Be Giants - Till My Head Falls Off (Live)*
There were 87 Advil in the bottle now there’s 30 left.
I ate 47 so what happened to the other 10?
There’s a small part of my brain that wishes TMBG got the widespread attention, respect, and mass success that they deserved before their excellent kids albums shoved them into the mainstream.
But there’s a much larger part of my brain that is happy I was able to enjoy them for so many years amongst modest numbers of truly faithful fans.
Of the bands I consider to be my all-time favorites, being a TMBG fan feels the most like I’m a member of a secret society that’s been given special access to some of the most entertaining music that’s ever been created.
*(I chose the Severe Tire Damage version only because the guitar solo absolutely rips.)
