Toadies - I Burn

3:30 for March 30th

One song. Two chords. Never dull.

My favorite thing about this song is that they spend two minutes adding layer upon sinister layer and then suddenly, just when you think things can’t get any darker, the tone changes at the 2:10 mark, the song simmers for another 45 seconds, and then finally ignites before exploding, collapsing in on itself, and snuffing itself out.

Or maybe I’m just over-thinking it.

Toadies - Pressed Against The Sky (steelopus cover)

Listen: I’m exhausted. This project has taken up, quite honestly, every minute of my free time for the past 30 days. There have been days when I questioned why I was even bothering, why anyone was listening, if anyone actually cared, and if it was worth all the lost sleep, skipped meals, and increased stress.

Despite good effort and steadfast dedication, many of these covers have just disappointed me. Those days are tough.

But then sometimes I record a cover like this one and, despite having only eaten a bowl of rice for dinner and despite typing this up at 1:30am and despite the fact that I still have 10 more long days of this ahead of me, I feel good about myself. This isn’t perfect, but it’s pretty good.

(30 down. 10 to go.)

Toadies - Pink

My top song in the 2010 WBER Listener Countdown.

How refreshing is this song? The structure and form is unlike anything else I’ve heard in a long time, yet it’s still immediately accessible.  I was entirely surprised to hear it getting airplay on WBER (they’ve not been traditionally welcoming to any Toadies album since Rubberneck), but I’m so glad they took a chance and put this song into rotation.  To me, it’s a perfect WBER track: a deep cut (track 9 of 9), not marketed as a single, unique, memorable, and something you’d never hear on commercial radio.

Very good stuff.

Here is my ballot for the top-5 songs on the 2010 WBER Listener Countdown.
I didn’t have enough time this year to do my usual elimination spreadsheet covering all 283 eligible songs, but I’ll admit to being surprised at how many songs I actually remembered enjoying in 2010, because I seem to think of it as a down year for music.
Honestly there were about 10 songs that could’ve been swapped into slots 2-5. Nothing really stood out. Toadies gets the #1 spot simply because I’ve got a long history with the band and the song is so unique.  Notably: this is the first time since 1995 that weezer has had eligible songs but I didn’t pick any of them for my top-5.

For InTheFade

LOVE this album. Jigsaw Girl is my favorite. No, Doll Skin. Or Plane Crash. The whole album.

It’s a perfect album from start to finish.  One of my Top 30 albums of the last decade.

Burden Brothers - Conditional

One of the best songs you’ve never heard.

There are a few tracks on the first Burden Brothers record that have the Toadies fingerprint all over them, but none more than this.  It’s good here, but I can only imagine how much better it could have been had it received the full Toadies treatment (ie, more sinister, more aggressive, more EBow).

Regardless of all that, the drum beat in the verses absolutely blows my mind.

I will never, ever get sick of this song.

Replace the word “song” with the word “band” and then this post is perfect.

So sorry none of you could make it to our open band practice yesterday.  Here’s a taste of what you missed:

Toadies - I Come From The Water (live cover)

OK, so it’s one-take and a rough audio mix from room mics, but it gets the point across.
Maybe next time some of you can join us.  We might even take your requests*!
