Pedro The Lion - To Protect The Family Name

5:30 for May 30th

One of David Bazan’s greatest talents is his ability to write catchy, memorable melodies and songs without always relying on the crutch of the traditional Verse/Chorus song structure. He uses a narrative style more often than most, especially on his more conceptual albums. This song is a perfect example.

Officer, please don’t haul me in, though I’m drunk again… I can explain.
I swear to you, for a week I have been completely dry, until tonight.
He’s been such a good example, everything he’s done for me, I couldn’t bear to let him down.

Monday night, brother sat me down very graciously and explained:
“If I’m going to help you, I must make it very clear,
brother that I love you, but certainly I hate your sin.”

So you see, you can’t arrest me. I swore I’d be careful not to further shame the family name.

Pedro The Lion - Winners Never Quit

5:17 for May 17th.

I’ve been playing this one a lot lately. It’s a great tune to warm up with.

Count it a blessing that you’re such a failure.
You’re second chance might never have come.

Pedro The Lion - Winners Never Quit

Today is a difficult day for America.

Here’s an entirely depressing song to celebrate the occasion.

if at first you don’t succeed
try, try again
if i were you i’d give up
the path is too narrow
the way is too steep

save your applause
for the end of the show

count it a blessing that you’re such a failure
your second chance might
never have come

For Toni, who shipped her awesome sons off to their grandma’s this morning.

This is one of my favorite songs.  It’s not exactly what you could describe as a happy song, but the “brothers heading for grandma’s” analogy is relevant.

All the way to grandma’s house
I stayed on a narrow path
But my brother wandered off
Deep into the woods

Pedro The Lion - Bad Things To Such Good People

Michele hasn’t had a very good week, but she still went out of her way to send me that amazing package of Del Taco sauce.  She’s not a good person; she’s a great person.  Here’s hoping things take a turn for the better.  Thanks again.  You’re a huge inspiration.

David Bazan - Slow And Steady Wins The Race (acoustic from his Alone At The Mic DVD)

OK, I know no one watches videos that show up in their dashboard, but I definitely think you should all watch this one.

This one video seems to perfectly sum up the man himself.

If you’re lame, you can skip right to 1:22 when he pulls up to a stop light, pulls out his guitar, and proceeds to play the song while in traffic.  The look from the guy in the truck next to him is priceless!

Towards the end there is an adorable father-daughter moment.
